10 Old Wives’ Tales About Gender Prediction That You Never Knew Had Existed!

Updated: Apr 17

Before bloodwork, amniocentesis, or ultrasounds were a thing, which was way back in the day, old wives' tales were relied on as far as determining the sex of the baby. And there are some expectant moms or aspiring moms that believe in these old wives' tales as well. Let's go over 10 of them right now!

The moment that you find out that you are pregnant, you are going to be dealing with so many emotions that can be so overwhelming. Emotions will be all over the place going from excitement, elation, and pure nervousness. Especially if it is going to be your first baby. You will be imagining what parenthood will be about (yikes), and what your baby will look like! One of the things you will be immediately wondering is whether you are having a boy or a girl.

You may have heard of so many old wives tales about finding out the sex of your baby. But the fact of the matter is that there are only 3 ways to find out. The first way is through bloodwork (or amniocentesis which can be risky to perform and only is performed in situations where it is warranted). The second way is through ultrasound. And finally, the most accurate way to find out your baby's sex is through giving birth!

However, before bloodwork, amniocentesis, or ultrasounds were a thing, which was way back in the day, old wives' tales were relied on as far as determining the sex of the baby. And there are some expectant moms or aspiring moms that believe in these old wives' tales as well. Let's go over 10 of them right now!

1. The Ring Test

One of the oldest old wives' tales around is that ring test. What you do is tie a ring on a string. Then after that, hang it over your bump. Watch how it swings. If it swings in a circular way, then you are having a girl. If it swings side by side, then it is a boy. And if you are having boy and girl twins, the ring would be swinging all over the place.

2. How Your Skin Feels

If you have dry skin, then it has been said that you are carrying a boy. If your skin is moist and oily, then you are carrying a girl.

3. The Baking Soda And Urine Test

There must be a grain of truth to this old wives' tale as an article on Healthline was about this specifically. However, the way it works is that you need to grab baking soda, and a cup and pee in it, first thing in the morning. That is when the urine is the most concentrated as throughout the day it is diluted with water. You will want to make sure you are wearing disposable gloves for safety reasons. After you pee in the cup, put an equal amount of baking soda in the cup of urine.

If the urine fizzes, then that is a sign that you are having a boy. If the urine does not change in the consistency, then you are having a girl. The urine fizzes based on acidic levels. But many factors can also play as to why the urine can be acidic or not which goes beyond the sex of the baby that you are carrying. Therefore, the accuracy of this test is reduced for that reason.

4. How The Mom Is Carrying The Baby

Are you carrying high? Then that means you are having a girl. Are you carrying low? Then that means you are having a boy. However, how accurate is that? The way you carry your baby is based on your height and body shape as well. Maybe the size of the baby has something to do with it as well.

5. Whether You Have A Glow Or Not

Ah, the pregnancy glow! What does that mean? The old wives' tale for this one is if you are glowing, then you are carrying a boy. But if you are not glowing, you are having a girl. Why would that be? Could it be the girl is taking away mom's good looks? The pregnancy glow really happens if the mom-to-be is having a good pregnancy.

For instance, if the mom is unlucky enough to be experiencing a condition such as Hyperemesis Gravidarum which is characterized by extreme nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, she will not be glowing! No one would pregnant or not if they were that sick. That was what Amy Schumer and Princess Kate had. Speaking of sickness during pregnancy, let's go onto the next one.

6. Morning Sickness

To make this clear, we know that morning sickness is not Hyperemesis Gravidarum but it is in the spectrum of NVP. It was said that if mom is having morning sickness, then chances are she is having a girl due to the extra hormones. Morning sickness can just be characterized by nausea and vomiting does not always happen. If the mom does not have it or has it very mild, then she is having a boy. That has been proven to be incorrect. Morning sickness can happen regardless of the sex of the baby the mom is carrying.

Here is one fact about a mom that does not have morning sickness. It has nothing to do with the sex of the baby. It has to do with how lucky she is to have escaped it! Also, a lack of morning sickness does not mean that anything is wrong either unless it suddenly just disappears earlier than it is meant to (and even then there is not always a reason to worry).

7. If The Partner Is Gaining Weight Along

Is the partner gaining weight along with you during your pregnancy? Oh, well there is an old wives' tale for that too. It is a sign that you are having a girl. But more accurately, it is just due to the fact that he is getting hungry watching you eat!

8. Sweet Or Salty Cravings?

Are you having a salty craving? Then you are having a boy. Are you having a sweet craving? Then it must be a girl. Or maybe you are just craving for something for whatever reason that has nothing to do with the baby's sex!

9. The Pupil Test

Look into the mirror. If your pupil dilates after a minute of looking, then you are having a boy. Or really, it is that your eye is getting tired.

10. Chinese Gender Predictor Chart

Look at the Chinese gender predictor chart, and then look at the age that you were when you had conceived your baby. Then put another finger on the month that you conceived. That is what will tell you what you are having. And again, what happens if you are having boy/girl twins? It is a fun thing to do but, the accuracy is 50/50.

So what do you think of these old wives' tales? There are some others as well but these are the ones that are the most known!
